Rising from the ashes

The weekend produced two comebacks — one that was legit and one that was more akin to snapping a slump. So, let's keep the respective victories by Anthony Kim and Collin Morikawa in perspective.

Before winning the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Collin Morikawa went 847 days without a victory. By comparison, Anthony Kim went 5,795 days between winning the 2010 Houston Open and the LIV Golf Adelaide. (Mateo Villalba / Golffile)

The story of the weekend in golf obviously was Anthony Kim and his LIV Golf League victory in Adelaide, and The Man Out Front has to agree. The comeback is incredible given the obstacles, some of them self-inflicted, that he overcame. Impressive. Inspirational.

But, gosh, how about that comeback on the PGA Tour? Collin Morikawa hadn’t won a tournament in 847 days until his one-stroke victory Sunday at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Morikawa had started to wonder when he would win again, could he ever end his drought. His last victory came at the 2023 ZoZo Championship in Japan, and since then, well, it’s been a struggle.

Yup, it was so emotionally challenging and his slump so severe, that Morikawa had fallen all the way to 19th in the world rankings before his victory at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
