PGA Tour needs to ride a transcendent champion to new heights in post-Tiger era, but list of fall winners underscores quest

Can the PGA Tour expand beyond its core golf audience with the likes of American Ben Griffin, a three-time winner and Ryder Cup player in 2025? (Stefano Di Maria / Golffile)

When the Ryder Cup concluded in late September and the Europeans took their pound of flesh from the Americans, the PGA Tour still cranked on with six events in the fall.

The winners – except for Xander Schauffele, who won the Baycurrent Classic in Japan – seem more appropriate for golf’s version of a witness protection program.

Think it’s unfair for the Forecaddie to refer to Steven Fisk, Michael Brennan, Ben Griffin, Adam Schenk and Sami Valimaki as golf unknowns? OK, so Griffin did win three times this year and played on the U.S. Ryder Cup team, which gives him some cachet, but if you are Brian Rolapp, the new CEO of the PGA Tour, are you hanging your hat on Griffin?

Looking forward, this is a problem for the PGA Tour, and it’s not unlike what other sports have had to address in the past: successfully finding other players to continue the sport’s legacy and fan interest.
